II cannoncino Bofors do 40 mm. venne impiegato da quasi tutti i protagonisti della II Guerra Mondiale: Giappone, Gran Bretagna (AA Mk.l), Germa­nia Flak 28), URSS, Stati Uniti (M1), Francia, Norvegia, Polonia (a.p. wz. 36), Grecia e tonti altri e a riprova delle sue straordinarie capacitò è ancora in uso, negli anni '80, in circa quaranta Paesi.

Il cannoncino fu progettato, su richiesta della Marina svedese, dalla Bofors (fabbrica nazionale) come cannone leggero antiaereo.

Dopo la Marina fu l'Esercito a richiederlo, però su affusto ruotato, ed è proprio in questa versione che l'arma ebbe il suo successo maggiore, forse al momento era il migliore cannoncino di quel tipo sul mercato. Molte nazioni acquistarono la licenza di fabbricazione di quest'arma tant’è vero che dal 1939 ogni paese europeo lo aveva nella propria linea di produzio­ne, seppur con piccole varianti.

L'impiego forse più inusuale per quest'arma spettò agli ungheresi che la montarono anche su un piccolo numero di Messerschmitt Me-210 come cannone anticarro.

The Bofors 40 mm gun was used by almost all the countries who faught in World War II, including Japan, Britain (AA Mk. 1), Germany (Flak 28),  the USSR, the United States (M1), France, Norway, Poland, (a.p.wz. 36), Greece and many more, and its continued use as late as the 1980’s in forty countries gives a convincing demonstration of this gun’s extraordinary capacities. Designed for Swedish Navy by Bofors, Sweden’s leading arms manufacturers, as a light anti-aircraft gun, the Swedish Army later later requested the gun mounted on a wheeled carriage, and it was this version that enjoyed the greatest success, probably because at the time it was the best weapon of this kind on the market. Many countries bought licences for its construction, and by 1939 every nation throughout Europe had its own production lines, although naturally there were slight variations in the models. Perhaps the most unusual use of this gun was in Hungary, where it was mounted on a small number of Messerschmitt Me-210’s as an anti tank gun.
