Quando la Rheinmetall produsse la mitragliatrice aerea MG-15 per la Luftwaffe, si tentò di sviluppare un’arma simile per l’esercito tedesco. Ne derivò quello che tuttora viene considerato uno dei modelli migliori di mitragliatrice mai prodotti: la Maschinengewehr 34 o MG-34. Partendo appunto dalla MG-15 i tecnici della Mauser, presso la fabbrica di Obendorff, inventarono un nuovo tipo di mitragliatrice, quella di impiego bivalente. Ovvero questa poteva essere utilizzata da una squadra di fucilieri come fucile mitragliatore (utilizzando il bipiede), oppure come mitragliatrice (usando un treppiede pesante) quando occorreva fare fuoco a distanza. L’alimentazione era di 2 tipi: mediante un caricatore a tamburo a slitta da 75 colpi ereditato dalla MG-15, oppure mediante nastro con scatole portamunizioni con 5 nastri da 50 colpi. La canna era provvista di un’efficace dispositivo per il cambio rapido per il raffreddamento. L’MG-34 fu subito un successo utilizzata in questo ruolo e, grazie alla sua elevata cadenza di tiro, era efficace anche contro i velivoli in volo a bassa quota. Passò subito in produzione e la domanda di nuove armi rimase elevata fino al 1945, superando la potenzialità.

In più la quantità di accessori forniti in dotazione impegnarono ulteriormente la capacità di produzione, che già era in crisi per la complessità e il costo della mitragliatrice. L’MG-34 risultò superba, ma la sua rifinitura eccessiva era  un grosso limite alla sua distribuzione alle truppe.

Furono prodotte 2 varianti principali: l’MG-34m con un manicotto della canna più pesante per l’impiego nei veicoli corazzati e le MG-34s, più corte per l’impiego antiaereo con la sola modalità di fuoco automatico. Vennero usati vari affusti per il montaggio all’interno di bunker o per postazioni binate, oltre al tipico treppiede Lafette 34 e ad un supporto telescopico per il fuoco a lunga distanza da posizioni fisse.

  When tha Rheinmetall produced the air machine-gun MG-15 for Luftwaffe, was tryed to develop a similar arm for the german land forces. From that project derive one of the best model of machine-gun in the history: the Maschinegewehr 34 or MG-34. Start by the MG-15 the Mauser's tecnics, in the factory of Obendorff, invented a new kind of machine-gun: the double purpose. This weapon could be used by a rifleman squad as submachine-gun (using a bipod), or used as machine-gun (mounted on the tripod) when was necessary shoot at long range. The ammunition supply was of 2 type: using a cylinder magazine with sledge by 75 rounds inherited from MG-15, or by metallic tape on cartridge cassette with 5 tapes by 50 rounds. The barrel  has an efficacious device for the fast change for cooling.

The MG-34 was immediately a success used in this role and, thanks to his high rate of fire, was efficacious even againts the aircraft flying in low quota. Was produced in large scale immediately and the demand of new weapons was high since 1945, Surmonting the factory potentiallity. Plus the ammount of accessory provide like equipment keep more busy the production capacity, that already had problem for the complexity and the high cost of the machin-gun. L'MG-34 result superb, but his excessive finishing touch was a big limit for the distribution to the troops. Was build 2 main variant: MG-34m with a barrel coupling more heavy for employment in armoured vehicle and the MG-34s, shorter for use like antiaircraft with only automatic fire modality.

Was used various gun carriage for the montage in the bunker or in a dual support other the typical tripod lafette 34 and a telescopic support for the long range fire from fix position.
