La Maschinengewehr 42 o MG-42 fu uno dei più grandi successi nel campo delle mitragliatrici. I tecnici della MAUSER volevano trovare un’alternativa economica e di facile produzione alla già eccellente MG-34. Grazie all’esperienza raccolta da altri progetti e alle idee dei tecnici MAUSER si poterono introdurre tecniche di produzione di massa e molte innovazioni che dimostrarono subito il valore del progetto. Ad esempio il sistema di alimentazione era allo stesso tempo semplice e sicuro, impiegava 2 rulli di bloccaggio della culatta che scorrevano verticalmente (ad essi è dovuto il tipico rumore da "sega elettrica" della MG-42) e una leva sull’otturatore che spostava i nastri fin dentro la camera di scoppio. Questo ingegnoso sistema conferiva alla mitragliatrice una poderosa cadenza di tiro. I proiettili entravano dal lato sinistro del castello e a destra c’era la comoda leva d’armamento. La MG-42 poteva impiegare vari tipi di sostegno, quando veniva usata come fucile mitragliatore veniva dotata di un bipiede. Il battesimo del fuoco avvenne nel 1942 sul fronte russo e nell’Africa settentrionale e il suo

successo fu tale che viene utilizzata ancora oggi da molti eserciti, l’unica modifica è che oggi si impiegano munizioni NATO da 7,62mm.

This ingenious system give to the machinegun a mighty rate of fire. The rounds entered on the left side of the castle and on the right was the handy armament lever.

The MG-42 can use some kind of support, When it was used like submachine gun be provide of a bipod.

The baptism of fire was in 1942 on the russian front and in northern Africa, its success was so big that it's using today in some military force, the unique modification is the new ammunition NATO caliber 7,62mm.
